I have just joined EPPI Reviewer and am completely new to the system.

I have conducted searches on sites such as Oxfam, ERIC and BRIDGE to gather articles/reports for my review. However, I am at a loss as to how to get the results from these searches into the EPPI Reviewer in order to start filtering the results/documents.

Can anyone give me a very basic lesson on how to start this process?

I searched Oxfam Publications with search word 'EConomic Empowerment' and it came up with 71 results. What do I do now?

Thank you!

Helen

Hello Helen,

I just had a look at Oxfam Publications (http://policy-practice.oxfam.org.uk/publications). It doesn't appear they have a mechanism to export the search results. What we do in this situation is to treat it as a website search by recording the number of items identified and examine/screen them on the website. If there are any appropriate items we then need to enter them by hand.

As for ERIC, it is a major database so they will have a way to save your search results. The method will depend on the portal you are using to access ERIC. There is ERIC via CSA, ERIC via EBSCOHOST, etc. If you let me know how you are accessing ERIC I might be able to help.

I'm not familiar with BRIDGE. Do you have a url for that database?

Best regards,

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

That solve the mystery with Oxfam then - so I will have to import them one by one?

I've tried it with one document, selected 'create new document' and inputing the data manually and then uploading the file. I was surprised I couldn't copy/paste the abstract (it gives me 'Silverlight') - is there a way around this? As I want to then do a search based on abstract&title. Is there a different way to upload the documents which is less time consuming?

As for ERIC, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by portal (I really do have basic understanding). this is the ULR link: http://eric.ed.gov/?q=Women+and+empowerment&ff1=dtySince_2010&ff2=subEmpowerment

BRIDGE is IDS website: http://www.bridge.ids.ac.uk/

I am also using ELDIS and have come up with similar issues as with Oxfam.

Thank you!

Helen

Hello Helen,

To copy and paste you just need to use the keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-c copy, Ctrl-v paste).

As for the searches, as BRIDGE and ELDIS are primarily websites rather than online databases it doesn't appear they have a mechanism for saving your search results. I spoke to one of our librarians who does much of our searching and what she often does in these situations is to screen the results online. When she finds a relevant item she will either manually enter it into EPPI-Reviewer or search for the same item in a online database that will allow you to save/export your results. Quite often the items that you find through website searching will also exist in online databases that allow you to save your search results.

As for ERIC, it appears that you are using the free version of ERIC and it looks like they have removed the abiltiy to save your search results in the free version. Can you get access to ERIC through a library that subscribes to ERIC (such as ERIC CSA)

Best regards,

Jeff
