Hello Jeff,

I have the following questions please:

  • In the "Documents" tab, is it possible to have columns (extra fields) corresponding to each code set we have created, so that at a glance we can see what code each document in our search was assigned for each code set? This would be very valuable as it will also allow us to track where we have reached in our coding. It is still not very clear to me how I can go back to the last record that I coded to continue screening my documents.
  • Is it possible to import my references along with their assigned codes into Excel for example?
  • One of the fields in the "Documents" tab is "YourID", what does this refer to? Can I automatically assign a unique identifier, other than the "Document ID", to my references which starts with 1 and goes up to the total number of references that I have?
  • In relation to linked studies. This is a very useful feature in Eppi-Review. Once i have identified all my linked documents, is it possible to have a count of the number of "studies" (not documents) that I have (counting linked papers as one study?)

Thank you very much for all your help!

Ghina

Hello Ghina

Re you questions...

The best way to know where you left off while screening is to create a 'Work assignment' for yourself in the Collaborate tab. When you create a work assignment the system will keep track of what you have coded and not coded. To know where you left off you just need to pull up your 'remaining' items. You will find details on how to create a work assignment in the user manual under 'Allocating references for coding'. The instructional video 'Screening - Part 1: single data entry' will also show how to do this. The short description is that you should create yourself an 'Allocation' codeset that contains a code to identify the items you want to be in your work assignment. This could be a subset of the items or all of the items depending on what you require. You then create a work assignment in the Collaborate tab using the code in the 'Allocation' codeset to identify the items to include in the assignment.  As for showing your progress or showing how each item was coded, there isn't a way to do this just in the documents tab. What you could do is select the item(s) (click the checkbox) you want to see the coding for and then click on the 'Get coding report(s) for selected item(s)' icon. You can then chose the codeset to generate a report of the item(s) coding.

The answer to your second question depends on the format you want you data to appear in but you could generate a report that included all of the questions in your codeset. The report can be saved as a word document that is in a table format. This could then be copied into excel.

The ‘Your document ID’ or ‘Imported’ field can hold an imported ID. If the references you are importing into EPPI-Reviewer are coming from an EndNote or Reference Manager database, the ‘Your document ID’ field will hold the ID that was assigned by EndNote or Reference Manager. The main ID is still generated by EPPI-Reviewer as it is a unique ID for all items in the database.

What you could do to count the link studies is to create a ‘Linked studies’ codeset. A code in that codeset could be assigned to all of your linked studies. If you wish you could then assign the (E) flag to those items so they don’t appear when you list your studies. They can still be identified and accessed using the code assigned to them from the ‘Linked studies’ codeset.

Best regards,

Jeff

Thx Jeff for all your answers,

Just to make sure I got it right, regarding importing the dataset into Excel or STATA for example, the only way to do it is through the report? There isn't a way to export the entire dataset, coded, for further analysis in a statistical software?

Thanks, Ghina

Hello Ghina,

The reports function is 'a way' of exporting the entire dataset in a user-defined way for further analysis. The other way is to use the item coding reports function (the 'Get coding report(s) for selected item(s)' icon on the documents tab) which can also be a way of getting all your data - but in a less useful way for further statistical analysis.

A large part of EPPI-Reviewer development is based on what our users tell us they require. If there is a particular format of output that you think would be useful please let us know and we can see about incorporating it into the software.

Best regards,

Jeff
