I am currently trying to code text in the documents that I have imported into EPPI reviewer.

In the view  text tab, I am selecting the text, going to the codes window, clicking on the code that I want to apply. When the pop up box appears I am chosing code selected text

I have two questions. 1) Can you only chose one code to apply at one time?  2) When I go to select the next part of the document to code, I have to remove the previously selected codes or else they seem to be applied to the newly selected text.  Am I doing this properly?

Thanks

Anne

Hello Anne,

Regarding your questions…

1. If I follow what you are doing correctly, you are highlighting text (it will show as blue), right clicking the code to apply it to, and then selecting ‘Code selected text’. If you then right click a second code and select ‘Code selected text’, the previous text should still be highlighted blue and will get applied to the second code (i.e. apply two codes to the same piece of text). I just carried out a short test and this is what I saw.  Are you not seeing this?

2. I’m not sure if I understand your question correctly but you shouldn’t have to remove the previously selected text. Each time you select a new bit of text to code it will un-highlight (so it is no longer blue) the previously selected bit of text. Only the highlighted (blue) text should be getting applied to a code. I tried to recreate what you are seeing but was unable to. Perhaps I am not following the same process you are? If you can recreate the process so I can recreate it as well I can have a further look.

Best regards,

Jeff

 Hello Jeff,

Thank you for this much of the information. When I do what is suggested above, select text. move to the code I want to apply and hover over it, right click and select " code selected text" it does that alright. But then when I move to a new piece of text to code, the check marks remain for the text I have already coded.  I am not certain if this is suppose to happen, or if the check marks should disappear each time I pick a new piece of the text to code. It gets a little confusing trying to remember what you have applied to what portion of the text.

Also, I am expecting some thing to show up in the code selection box at the bottom of the screen. Nothing is appearing there.

Anne :)

Hello Anne,

The check boxes shown as ticked are based on the codes applied to an item rather than just text. For example, if you had 10 codes in your coding tool one item might have used 4 of the codes (so 4 checkboxes are ticked). On another item 5 codes may have been used (so there would be 5 check boxes ticked).  A code might represent a theme and an item mgiht contain text that can be tied to multiple themes (thus multiple checked codes). So, the checkmarks will not disappear when you are selecting new text. If you right click one of the codes you can list the text that has been applied that code.

The code selection box (or rather the  'codes applied in selection' box) will display all codes that have been applied to the text that is presently selected. If you select a section of text that has had a code applied to it, the code will be displayed in the box below the text. This will help you to quickly see if you have already coded a section of text and how it was coded. If you select some text and the box displays a code as being applied to that text, you can then right click that code and select 'Show text coded with this code' to see exactly what text was coded.

Best regards,

Jeff
