Several issues with the report generator:

1. Is there a way to make an "Answer" report by not having to make x number of new columns and drag each of my codes to a new column? i.e. Could I just choose one of my code sets and specify that I want to export all nested codes under that code each in a separate column?

2. I'd love to make a single report with chosen columns exported as "Answer" and others as "Question".
I know I can export separate reports and then combine them but this is inconvenient when working with a lot of codes.

3.It would be much more convenient if report columns would automatically change their headline to the name of the answer code dragged to them. Renaming them manually is a great pain when working with many codes.

4.I do exporting so that I can work with my codes in Excel. The most convenient method I've found is export report to html, and then copy to Excel. However, Excel takes line breaks within the html table cells as new rows. E.g.
"Code name

  • code value"

comes out as two rows in Excel.

so I also have to add a step where I copy the html to a text editor and remove all the line breaks.
Consequently it would be easier if you included direct export to an Excel compatible format or at least made the cell output for one code without a line break at the bullet point.

Any advice is welcome.

Hello Reinis,

Re your questions:

1. Unfortunately there isn't a function to automatically generate and populate columns based on the child codes of a selected code (or codeset).

2. It isn't possible to mix answer columns and question columns in the same report. You would need to run and save each report separately and then combine them in either Word or Excel (if you save a report as html you can open it in Excel)

3. That would be a good option for an answer column as there can only be one code in the column.

4. There is an issue with how Excel interprets the <br /> tags in the html (i.e. it creates multiple cells). If you do a search and replace in your html file for <br /> and replaced it with <br style="mso-data-placement:same-cell;"/> the data ends in a single cell. Would this help in what you have described?

Best regards,
Jeff

I noticed that EPPI-Reviewer isn't able to export reports with a great number of columns (e.g. report 'FULL_answer_8' in my review "New report").

The memory usage in task manager just climbs to 3-6 GB and the program is stuck (not responding but no crash). Left it to work overnight but no change.
I typically use Firefox. When I tried Internet Explorer on a few occasions I got the message: "System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown."
In other cases the browser simply crashed.

No such problem with reports with less columns but at this point reducing all my reports is inconvenient because there is no option to duplicate report templates so it means dragging all the codes from scratch.

I'm wondering if this is due to memory limitations?
I've noticed that the EPPI tab runs in *32 bit even though I use a 64 bit browser on a 64 bit system.

Or perhaps the preview window just can't bear to visualise the columns?
Personally, I don't need the preview window. Direct export to an html file is what I need.

EDIT: I found a workaround by reducing the number of articles included in the report. This is easier than reducing the columns but still a bother.

Hi Reinis,

The workaround you found is what I was going to suggest: reducing the number of items used to generate a report is unfortunately the only way forward. You are correct, EPPI-Reviewer in its current form is limited to the x86 (32 bit) version. There are a number of tricky obstacles to overcome in order to make it available also in x64, so I don't think it will happen (we are very busy writing the next version instead).

If it helps, you could use the "select the fields you want to display..." button in the main toolbar (left to the binoculars icon) to change the page size: get the list of items you want to use for the report, select all, create the report with "all selected items" as your "items to include", save the report. You can then flick to the next page and repeat. Of course it would be better if it were possible to get all data in one go, but at least in this way you should be able to set the page size in such a way that reports won't kill the user interface, while minimising the number of times that you'll need to repeat the process.

I hope this helps,
Sergio
