Hi!

We have a team of five coders about to start the data extraction on a qualitative review, using the line by line coding.

We want to set up this stage so that each coder codes 1/5 of the articles, but that a second coder reviews the coding done by the first with a view to catching any possible errors or omissions.

Is there any way to do this?

The only way we have thought of is to generate a coding report for each individual article (if this is possible) and have the second coder read through the article alongside the report.

But possibly there is a better way to do this??

Thank you so much for your support.

Dear Sherri,

Though there are features built-in to EPPI Reviewer 4 to allow comparison coding / data extraction, and handle the underlying work allocation between colleagues, to produce reconciliation reports (where differences in each person's coding / data extraction are listed) is difficult when the coding has been done on a line-by-line coding basis; one person may code an entire paragraph, whilst another may allocate a code to a single phrase within the paragraph, even though both wish to indicate the same thing - thus automating comparisons can be tricky.

You are right to assume that generating a coding report on each particular item would be the best way to approach any disagreements over coding or data extraction.

(I trust that you are now familiar with the initial steps to allocate work, and do standard comparison reports. Those elements of the software will still assist you when undertaking line-by-line comparison coding. Just in case, there is further information on comparison coding from around page 52 of the manual, available at https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/CMS/Portals/35...er%20manual.pdf. There are also videos on comparison / collaboration, and line-by-line coding, available from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R221RsX4tY and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbAgKgJiOcc respectively.)

I hope that helps, but do let us know if you'd like further information or assistance.

Kind regards,

Zak Ghouze
