I'm having a couple of technical problems with up&downloading. Uploading sometimes hangs for no obvious reason (and i can't see a way to cancel & make it stop trying, short of restarting EPPI-Reviewer). (This seems to be more of a problem with some computers/locations than others.) Downloading quite often crashes Silverlight altogether.

thanks

Hi Theo,

About the upload problems:
yes, I can see the trace of a failed upload attempt from this morning. We've had one or two people complaining about horribly slow upload issues. And as you say, it looks like it's something about the location or specific computer, and confirms my initial impression: it seems a networking issue and it's likely that there is little for me to work on. We had much bigger problems in the very early beta stages and resorted to use a commercial "upload" component for Silverlight. This solved our old problems and created the new one you've experienced: if for some reason the upload is very slow, there is no obvious way to cancel and try again. I might be able to do something here but I can't promise!

Download:
This is the first report I've had about this, but it is probably less important as I'm already writing a brand new system to handle downloads. Some of it should be ready for the next update, but since it is in an early development stage we haven’t decided a publish date yet.
In any case, could you give me some more details? I'd like to know if you are using Firefox or another browser and at what stage the Silverlight component crashes: it's a very surprising behaviour as the original document is shown outside Silverlight.

In short: I'll look into it but I'm not guaranteed to get fantastic results.

All the best and thanks for letting us know!
Sergio

hi Sergio,

Thanks for looking into this. The downloading issue - i'm using Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP (i've not tried with IE). The downloaded file does open successfully, then Silverlight crashes immediately afterwards. It doesn't happen every time, but at least 50%. I've only been attempting this for a couple of days, but it seems to be happening fairly consistently.

Hi Theo,

thanks for the feedback.
I am guessing here, but this might be related to Firefox and its counter-productive crash protection. I've explained how to disable this component for Silverligth pugins in here - this might be enough to solve your download problem (and a few other minor annoyances). If you don't want to fiddle with Firefox settings, you could try a few things:

1) try Internet Explorer.
2) note if this happens with small PDFs as well. It's the size that counts, as I suspect that what makes it crash is the time that passes from when you click "View original" and when the document is finally displayed.
3) just as a double check, you might want to make sure that you already have a PDF opened within firefox before clicking on "View Original": see if this stops the crashes.

If you'll try any of the options above, I would be eager to know the result: even a "no change" effect should be informative for me.

Many thanks and sorry for the inconvenience,

Sergio

Perversely it seems to have stopped now & is working fine, so i can't shed any more light. i'll leave it for now & see if the problem returns

Hi Again,
I've fixed the upload control: it should be possible to cancel an upload without problems after the next update. I've also changed some setting that might make awkwardly slow uploads less frequent, but I have no way to verify if and how this may affect you.
Both new tweaks will be published with the next update, I am hoping that a new mechanism to access the uploaded files will be included as well.
There is no fixed date for the next version release: there are several new features in our plans and we can't be sure when we'll be ready.

Best wishes,
Sergio
