Having not used EPPI Reviewer previously, I’m unclear about how to return to a set of references that I have not completed coding, so that I pick up exactly where I left off, i.e. if I had coded 100 out of 1001, I could restart at ref 101. Is there a simple way of doing this?

Hello Stephen,

The best way to do this is to set up a work allocation in the Collaborate tab. When you set up a work allocation the system will keep track of what you have coded and not coded. There are 3 columns in the work allocation table that show this information: Allocated, Started and Remaining.

If you click in the Allocated cell, all of the items allocated to you will be listed in the documents tab. If you click in the Started cell, all of the items that you have already coded will be listed in the Documents tab. The Remaining cell tells you what you haven't coded yet. If you click in this cell all the items that need to be coded will be listed in the Documents tab. You can then click on Go for the first item and continue moving through the items. As you code further items, the numbers in the work allocation table will change accordingly.

You will also find this described in the user manual under Coding allocated references.

Best regards,

Jeff

If you've not been using the work allocation functions, you can also use the search to find documents "that don't have any codes from this set".

James.

Hi Jeff and james,

Thanks both for those replies. I now think my issue might be something else. I've been working on a subgroup of 700 references from a much larger set that I am working on with my colleague Theo (who I think you know). He set up this subgroup (10% of the total) and I coded 75 of these references on Friday and then came back to them yesterday morning. I'd looked at the user manual and had used James' suggestion to search for those uncoded references. I then coded some 250 or so yesterday morning. I then went off to do some other work. Coming back in the afternoon it appeared that the codes I had assigned in the morning session had disappeared. Using either of your suggestions I can only find 75 of the 700 references that have codes. If I open the full 700 and go through from reference 1 oncen I get to 76 it has no code - though I am certain I coded it (it is a memorable reference). Any idea where I went wrong?

Hello Stephen,

If I look at the review statistics tab in your review I can see you have coded a total of 996 items using your screening codeset. If I click on the 996 cell it will pull up those items.

If I then click into those items to open up the Document details window and turn on Live comparison (in the coding record tab) I can see your coding for those items. The coding is there so I don't believe anything has been lost at this point.

What I will check now is to see if the items you have coded are part of your work allocation.

I will email you directly in case I need to ask questions specifically about your review.

Best regards,

Jeff Brunton

Hello Stephen,

I believe what has happened is that a number of items may have been coded that weren't part of the work allocation.

If items have been allocated the best way to identify the uncoded items is to pull them up in the Collaborate tab by selecting the cell from the Remaining column. This way you can be sure you are getting the items that have been allocated to you.

For your review I have assigned a code to the items that were coded by not allocated to help you identify them. At this point you could either add those items to your existing allocation or create a new allocation with those items.

Best regards,

Jeff
