Hello, we have a problem with the EPPI tool and I would like to ask your advice on how to solve it:

For the coding we click on the exclusion criteria boxes, but the reference are not automatically excluded, i.e. the references are still included, showing the flag included in the lists of references. It seems that this was not the case before, I am not sure. Is the “automatic exclusion” after ticking an exclusion criteria possible in the EPPI reviewer? Or do we have to untick the box “included?”  below the references on the sheet of the coding task (right-side)? I understand that if this box is unticked the reference/study is tagged with E, excluded.

Thanks for your help.

Regards, Marie.

Hello Marie,

The Inclusion (I) and Exclusion (E) flags are not tied directly to any of the coding tools. They are a mechanism to help manage the items that you are currently working with and are assigned manually (through the ‘Assign documents to be Included or Excluded’ icon). There could be many reasons why a reviewer may wish to consider an item excluded and those reasons may span across many different codes in different coding tools. It is possible that an item that is marked as (E) at one point may be an (I) at a later point depending on what they reviewer is doing with that item at a particular time. If you are referring to Include and Exclude with respect to screening, it is the codes in your screening codesets and how they are applied that should determine the items status (and the (I) and (E) flags can be assigned, if you wish, to reflect that coding).

Best regards,

Jeff
