Hi there,

I would like to look into using the priority screening tool of EPPI reviewer 4 and have been following the instructions starting p.78 of the user guide. However, I cannot even start using the screening tab of the software.

I've enabled the screening tab, as instructed in a previous forum post but now am not allowed to use it. The tab is 'frozen' and does not allow me to select any of my code sets for screening.

Could you please let me know what I need to do to enable this functionality?

Hi Zoé,

I've given a look, and it seems that what you are missing is a coding tool (AKA codeset) of "Screening" type.

Coding tools of "screening" type have special "qualities" which are important to allow the priority screening system to do its job appropriately, for example, when configured to do "double coding" (people screening each item = 2 or more), using a coding tool of "screening" type allows the system to automatically reconcile differences based on the Include/Exclude distinction.

Thus, to use priority screening as intended, the system allows to select only coding tools of screening type (from the "Screening codeset" dropdown list). The choice of "Screening codeset" then drives everything else, which is why all other controls are currently disabled for you.

Also, looking at your review (assuming I've picked the right one), you currently have 23 items, which is too little to allow the priority screening mechanism to actually do anything useful (it's there to help when people need to screen many thousands of items). You probably know this already, I'm mentioning it only because I tend to be overzealous (with apologies).

I hope this helps,

Sergio

Hi Sergio,

Thank you for your answer. I've had a go and it solved the issue.

Thanks also for your note about the number of items I'm reviewing. I'm actually doing a trial review for my research lab who will then be using EPPI reviewer for thousands of items so it's more like a practice run!

Thanks again,

Zoé

Hi Sergio,

This is a separate issue so I'm not sure whether I should mention this here or in a separate thread...

My research director is keen to preserve the 'location in archive' or 'persistent' I.D. that are assigned to references in Zotero, when importing documents into EPPI reviewer using an RIS file. Is there a way to not have to do this manually? Which RIS field would we need to use?

Thanks,

Zoé

Hello Zoé,

Please don't worry about threads, the bulk of our support requests arrive via email and I'm not sure if many people actually browse the forum to see if their questions have already been answered.

The RIS import native in EPPI-Reviewer can include one (and only one) "imported ID", by looking in these two fields from an RIS file:

U1  -
or
ID  -

I would recommend to use the "ID  -" field and only that one. I confess I'm not familiar with Zotero, not enough to know how to customise its own "export to RIS" feature - I hope this will be possible for you.

The above will work, but might still not be the perfect solution for you, depending on your specific needs. The catch in question is that importing items will generate new "EPPI-Reviewer" IDs, so when using the "Export to RIS" feature of EPPI-Reviewer these IDs will be dutifully exported. Specifically, they will be exported using the "U1  -" field/tag, while the value of the "Imported ID" will be exported in the "U2  -" field (if any).

I mention this because it's likely that doing a round trip, Zotero to EPPI-Reviewer to Zotero will most likely lose the original IDs as new ones get generated... I hope I've managed to explain what I have in mind, please do ask for clarifications, if I didn't.
