For the last couple of days I haven´t been able to manually add duplicates. When I press the button "add selected item/s" nothing happens and I get a message (in swedish) in the bottom of the page that says there is something wrong with this page. Do you know why?

Dear Camilla,

I'm sorry to hear about this. I don't know what is wrong in this case: I can manually add duplicates in my reviews with no problem. This probably indicates that there is a specific problem with either your review or your environment (as in: browser, connection, firewall, Silverlight plugin and the like).

I am hoping the problem is with your review, as this would mean that we should be able to find out what is wrong and try to fix it. To do so I will need some information from you: if you agree, I can logon into your review and try to do exactly what generates your error. To do so I will need you to point me to the item_id of the item you are manually trying to add and to the group you are trying to use (you can post this information on the forum, or, if you prefer, send it to eppisupport@ioe.ac.uk). If an error will be generated there is a good chance I will be able to fix this quickly.

Many thanks,

Sergio

The name of my review is "palliativ vard av barn". The items I am trying to add is: 763120, 763295, 763228, 763306, 763260. I have not created any group for myself, but there is a group on the left side which is the duplicates generated automatically. I have been able to manually add duplicates earlier.. My email is camilla.wiberg@socialstyrelsen.se if you need contact.

Many thanks for your help!

Sergio,

I think I sorted it out for myself, I did a new check on the automatically managing duplicates and got a hole bunch of new duplicates. Strange thogh that I didn´t get these ones before.

Thank you Camilla,

I've just given it a go: unfortunately I could not replicate the error. I've tried to add item 763120 to group 90674 and it worked at the first attempt, I have then removed it to leave the review in the state I've found it. This leaves me basically in the dark, as I can't find out what the error is without causing the error first.

However, I do have a suggestion: from what I've seen, it seems very likely that you haven't searched for new duplicates after importing the last batch of items (the pubmed source), this will explain why you have the need to manually mark so many items as duplicates. Maybe we haven't made this clear enough in the manual: since looking for duplicates is a very resource intensive task, it doesn't happen automatically, but requires the user to manually trigger it when needed.

More specifically, to get the best possible results (and waste the least of time), one should click on "Get new duplicates" one time only, just after importing the last batch of items. It is possible to "get new duplicates" many more times (for example, each time a new source is imported), but this carries the possibility of creating multiple overlapping groups that will make the duplicate handling more complex.

Back on your case: I think your best option would be to click on "Get new duplicates" (I expect this to take at least 5 minutes to complete) and verify what new groups will be created. If all goes well, most of the items you have identified that still need to be marked as duplicates will be now in their own group (this doesn't apply for items that you have already "added manually").

Finally, and for completeness sake, I would like to try to manually add duplicates once more, just to see if the same error happens again, if it does, I would be very grateful if you could send a screenshot to eppisupport@ioe.ac.uk, this might help me to understand what was wrong in the first place.

UPDATE: while I was writing this, you latest message arrived. I see you've done exactly what I was suggesting!

Please do feel free to post here whenever you are in need of some help.

Best wishes,

Sergio
