 Hi Jeff,

I have a question regarding the Data Extraction phase in EPPI.

We are underway with extracting data from a set of research studies. However, our question refers to coding multiple independent studies reported from one study. More specifically, we have one study that reports 5 separate (independent studies) results and were wondering how to code this EPPI as separate entries. So we would have 5 separate sets of data extracted for each study. Is there a way separate the data among its respective study (i.e., extracting for Study 1, then extracting for Study 2, etc.)?

Hello Jessica,

The unit of analysis in systematic reviews is usually the study so what we normally do in your situation is create a record for each result, even if all of the results are reported in the same paper. If the original paper was 'Smith (2008)' we would manually create records called 'Smith 2 (2008)', 'Smith 3 (2008)', etc. for each result. A separate data extraction would be carried out on each record.

We would also link each of those Smith records so someone could easily see that they were all connected to the same paper.
