Hi,

I am in the process of setting up our coding (data extraction tool) in Eppi-Reviewer for our overview paper (review of reviews). I am wondering the best way to set it up so that my coders will properly input the information. For example, we have a number of items that are more text-based then checkbox: what were the publication dates of eligible articles; what is the main outcome of the review; and how was this outcome defined? It seems the only place for these kinds of items to go is in the "info" tab next to a specific question - but am I missing another input type? For example, the outcomes coding tool is very robust with a few prompts for data to be input. But I can't seem to get something similar for non-outcome type of coding and I would like the tool to be as straightforward as possible for my coders. Any guideance you can give would be very much appreciated!

Thank you,

Emily

Hello Emily,

How we normally deal with questions such as 'what is the date' is to have a number of possible answers to chose from. It will normally be ranges (ex. 1990-1995, 1996-2000, etc.) but if you have a smaller list of dates (say 2005-2015) I would just have 10 possible answers to choose from. It is always better to have an answer to select rather than entering a textual response. With selectable answers you can run frequency or cross-tab reports. When you have to type in the answer not everyone might type in the same response in the same way.

If you can't create a category for the answer then using the Info box will be the only alternative.

Best regards,

Jeff
