The IoE has a Teaching committee, which reports to Senate, one of the Institute’s 3 statutory committees (Council, Senate and Academic Board). TEACHING All teaching by members of SSRU staff which is done in collaboration with, or run by, other faculties or departments at IoE, or with external bodies must be contracted with the Unit. All SSRU staff asked to do any teaching at the Institute or elsewhere should speak to the Faculty Research Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Manager in the first instance. TEACHING See IoE Policy and procedures As with all work, any teaching must be arranged via Faculty Research Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Manager in the first instance (see Unit Policy).

IoE has a Doctoral Students Consultative Committee and a Student Disciplinary Action Appeals Committee – information including agendas and minutes available on the website. |
RESEARCH STUDENTS The Unit is required to increase its student targets annually. For this reason the Unit welcomes support from staff who are able to supervise research students. |
RESEARCH STUDENTS The Unit Administrative Officer is the Unit Research Student Administrator and deals with all aspects of research student administration including maintaining files, servicing the committees and assisting the research tutor as required. Once a new student is confirmed to the UMC by the Research Tutor, the Unit Administrator initiates their induction. There is a dedicated student desk in 10 Woburn Square. There are dedicated student rooms for the Faculty in the basement of 26 Woburn Square. The Unit Administrator files records of postgraduate students’ supervisions and annual reviews, and prepares the minutes of the SSRU Postgraduate researchers’ Advisory Group. |
RESEARCH STUDENTS Staff interested in undertaking post-graduate training, or in supervising PhDs should speak to the Unit’s Research Student Tutor. The Unit’s Research Student Tutor is responsible for student issues and for members of staff or others studying for postgraduate degrees in the Unit and to liaise with UMC by attending UMC every 6 weeks. The Research Student Tutor chairs the Unit's Research Student Advisory Committee which consists of staff involved with supervising graduate students. The committee provides support for graduate students and their supervisors, including: registration; annual review; upgrading; thesis preparation; selection of examiners; and arrangements for the viva. Details of this Advisory Group can be found in Appendix 2 in the Supervisors’ Handbook.Staff members who are students can apply to take study leave earlier than normal (but not in their 1st year of employment). This must be agreed in discussion with UMC and their Project Director (see Study Leave for more information).

STUDENT SUPERVISION The Unit will pay staff for their time supervising students, up to agreed levels. External supervisors of students based at the Unit will be paid hourly (student's fees are not paid to their institutions). |

STUDENT SUPERVISION Supervisors at the Unit should liaise with the Faculty Research Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Manager about supervision workload. They are entitled to claim for:
Pay of half a days salary per supervision can be claimed. If there are 2 joint supervisors these fees will be shared on the basis of the % supervision. Where supervisors are already fully committed this fee will be reimbursed to the relevant project accounts. |
