What do we want to know?

Health can be affected by a wide range of wider determinants, including physical environments and social inequalities. These determinants have an impact on many different health outcomes.

Who wants to know?

This independent research report was commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research Policy Research Programme for the Department of Health and Social Care.

What did we find?

This systematic map includes 742 systematic reviews with meta-analysis of observational data linking wider determinants to health outcomes. Many different determinants have been investigated, with the largest body of literature on environmental pollutants. A wide range of health outcomes have also been studied, including cardiovascular health, cancer, diabetes, and mental health outcomes.
