Purpose

The purpose of this web database is to show the breadth of available evidence in relation to teachers' training for parental engagement. It is designed to support the following publication:

Jones, C. (in preparation ) Preparing teachers to facilitate effective parental engagement [PhD thesis]. University of Warwick.
Jones, C., Rutter, T. & Palikara, O. (in preparation) Preparing teachers for parental engagement: A systematic scoping review.

Coverage

The database contains 348 unique studies that contain attempts to prepare teachers to work with families. It is based on a comprehensive literature search spanning 1996- 2022, Please see the related publications for full methodological details including research questions, search terms, inclusion and exclusion criteria, approach to quality appraisal etc.

Using the database

To view the full list of included studies, click 'all records' in the top right corner.

The database can be filtered to identify evidence that matches your context (e.g., by place, quality level, training type, training duration, school level, teacher status etc.). To do this, select the filter you wish to use from the list on the left side and then click 'list records' in the top left.

You can also generate visualisations and crosstabulations directly from the database. To generate graphs or tables for a single variable, select the variable of interest from the list on the left side, then use the central box labelled 'frequencies' to chose how you want the information to be displated. Alternatively, use the 'Maps and Crosstabs' box in the bottom right to create multi-variable displays.

Clicking on a study will display the full reference, abstract, and weblink where available.

An interactive evidence gap map using the same set of studies is available here.

Queries and suggestions

If you believe that a study is missing or incorrectly coded, please contact c.jones.27@warwick.ac.uk with details.

Note: The coding does not always match authors’ descriptions of their own study because they are based on the reviewers’ judgement of what is reported, in relation to the specific questions guiding this scoping review. For example, a mixed methods study of teachers’ professional development will be labelled as qualitative in this map if only the qualitative data relates to parental engagement. Similarly, a study may have 100 participants overall, but N will be recorded as less for the purposes of this review if only a subset of the participants were school teachers.
