Laptop Facilities

The laptop is running Windows 2000 and Office 2003, and can be used stand-alone or on the IOE network. You can also use a data stick or you can choose between floppy or CD-ROM by plugging in the appropriate module to the right-hand bay.

Laptop - switching on and off

Before switching on, make sure the correct module is installed (CD-ROM or Floppy), and also make sure the NETWORK CABLE is connected if you're going to be using the network. To switch on, connect the power supply and press the large power button (located to the rear of the keyboard).

To switch off, choose "Shut down" when logging off, and wait for it to power down before unplugging

Logging on (Local logon vs Network logon)

There's two different ways to log on; "Network" and "Local".

You can use Local logon to run a presentation from a data stick, CD or floppy or from the laptop's hard drive. It's recommended to use local logon when doing a presentation with a projector, as the machine will be exempt from possible network errors. To log on locally, use "user" and "user" for both the user name and password, and choose "SSRULAP30 (This computer)" for the domain. There's a folder called "d:\work" for putting local files in.

Network logon is useful if you need the internet or EPPIReviewer. You can also copy files to the laptop hard disk. To use the network logon, connect the network cable to a wall point. At logon, set domain to IOE and enter your UserName and Password.

Using the projector

Make sure you've powered up the laptop before the projector.

Unpack the projector, set it up on a table, adjust the legs at the front to get the desired tilt angle. Connect the mains lead. Carefully remove the lens cap by squeezing the two tabs and pulling away.

Insert the mains lead at the side, and then press the power button on the top.

Connect the video cable from the back of the laptop to the back of the projector. Use FN+F8 on the laptop keyboard (FN+F5 on some laptops) to cycle between the screens. e.g. "Laptop only", "Projector only", "Both at once".

On rare occasions, if the projector screen says "no signal" you may need to press the "input" button on the top of the projector to cycle through the various projector inputs. Currently this should be 'Computer 2' and 'RGB'.

IMPORTANT note about switching off the projector - After use, the projector has to go through a "cooling" cycle. To switch off the projector; press the power button once (the text "Power Off" should appear on the projection screen). Press the button again and this time the projector lamp will turn off. The projector fans will then run at high speed for approx 2 minutes and then the projector will power off. It's now safe to unplug from the mains. Replace the lens cap, collapse the legs, and pack away.
