RESEARCH PROPOSALS

Both the Faculty’s Research, Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer team and thehe Institute’s central Research and Consultancy Services department are available to advise on funding applications.

IoE requires risk assessments to be completed for all funding proposals.

SSRU has a template risk assessment form to help you with this task which is available here.

It is important to note that research carried out as part of consultancy is known as ‘third stream activity’ and is costed differently.

More information is available from the IoE's specialist support department Research and Consultancy Services.  This includes the project directors pack (undated) available here

An IoE document called Good Practice in Leading and Supporting a Research Team' is available here.

RESEARCH PROPOSALS

The Unit's process for developing proposals for research or consultancy has been revised and is available here.

In addition to IoE’s procedures, all funding proposals are considered by UMC before submission and judged against a checklist.

All funding applications should seek to recover their full economic cost (and more where possible).

Successful management of projects includes for example:

  • Recruiting and induction of staff
  • Leading a team
  • Professional development
  • Handling budgets
  • Data management

Relevant information can be found in many sections of the handbook.  See for example recruitment, staff contractual issues, Criminal Records Bureau and finance.

All new projects have a named UMC lead available to them from the start of the project.  The UMC member will be responsible for keeping in touch with the Project Director over the course of the project to offer advice and support

NB Deciding which staff to name on funding applications is a balance between strengthening the funding application, being fair to all staff working at the Unit and not weakening current research projects by drawing staff away from them. These decisions needed to be made by the main applicant, in discussion with UMC and the member(s) of staff’s current project director(s).

RESEARCH PROPOSALS

The Faculty Research, Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Manager and Research, Consultancy and Finance Administrator have procedures for costing different aspects of projects and should be consulted as early as possible in the application process regarding the proposed budget. All budgets need to include Institute Estate and Indirect Costs plus specific Unit costs.

RESEARCH PROPOSALS

Staff wishing to put together a funding proposal should speak to their line manager in the first instance.

UMC should be informed of all proposed applications at an early stage of development and time should be allowed for UMC and Institute checking procedures before submission to the funding body. N.B. Staff wishing to apply to funders who do not pay full overheads must discuss this with UMC before preparing the funding application.

It is important to note that all applications to Research Councils and strategically important funders should also be sent to the IOE’s Assistant Director of Research for internal peer review a minimum of 3 weeks prior to the submission deadline for an application.

Further guidance is available here.

For further information on the allocation of research work to staff, see staff contractual issues.

RESEARCH ETHICS

IoE policies and guidance are available here.

On induction all research staff are required to state which professional code of conduct they adhere to and are required to formally state if this changes. This is recorded and held on file by the Unit Administrative Officer.

RESEARCH ETHICS

The Unit’s Policy on Ethics in Social Research is available here (Dated 1997)

RESEARCH ETHICS

RESEARCH ETHICS

On induction all staff are required to inform the Unit Administrative Officer which Code of Conduct to they adhere (e.g. BERA). The UAO keeps a record of this on file.

All research projects need ethics approval from the Faculty Research Ethics Committee. The paperwork is available from www.ioe.ac.uk/ethics

RESEARCH PROJECTS

The Institute has produced guidance on managing research projects as part of the ‘Project Directors Pack’ available here.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Staff are advised to consult with line managers for support in managing research projects. Training and support are also available via Staff development.
