The Social Science Research Unit is part of the Faculty of Children and Health. The Faculty Research Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Manager, who is part of the Faculty management structure provides advice and support for all administrative and contractual aspects of externally-funded research projects, consultancy and knowledge transfer. In the IoE, Research and consultancy services also provides advice and support in this area. The Human Resources department offers advice on staffing issues and the Institute staff development programme. In order to ensure clear communication and consistency of approach, SSRU staff should liaise in the first instance with their Line Manager or a member of the Unit Management Committee about personnel, staff development, and research administrative issues. |
The Unit’s Executive Director holds overall responsibility for the management of the Unit supported by the Unit’s Management Committee (UMC). UMC technically (as far as IoE structures are concerned) fulfils the roles of both the Unit's Research Committee and the Unit's Management Committee. UMC is made up of the Executive Director, Deputy Director an Assistant Director and a UMC Officer. UMC usually meets fortnightly. The Faculty Research Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Manager and the Research, Consultancy and Finance Administrator routinely attend for part of the meetings. Additional 'leads' (e.g. Research Tutor, Unit Meeting chairs) attend meetings every 6 weeks to discuss specific agenda items. The UMC is the main forum for the management team to coordinate the management of the Unit. Specific issues routinely addressed by UMC include: checking and agreeing to submission of funding proposals, and Unit publications; recruitment of staff, renewal of staff contracts and redundancy. |
The
Unit Administrative Officer is secretary to UMC, although minutes of the
meetings are generally taken by the Assistant Director or UMC Officer.
The UAO provides the committee with copies of the master list of recent
project applications which is discussed and updated in UMC meetings.
|
If
staff would like to raise any issue about the running of the Unit they
can do so through their Line Manager, or by approaching any member of
UMC. Details of past minutes, current members, and the date of the next meeting for UMC are available on the internal website. |
