The Executive Director has line management responsibility for the whole Unit and
reports to the Director of the Institute of Education. This line
management responsibility is delegated to appropriate senior colleagues
to enable better performance management and best practice in employee
development.

Most staff work on one (or more) research projects and the management of those projects is the responsibility of the Project's Director. Day-to-day work on projects is therefore under the direction of the Project Directors, but within the broader context of the Unit's line management structure. Project Directors or others should not ask members of staff to undertake a substantial task without firstly liaising with that member of staff's line manager. Details of how line managers and project directors should liaise with each other regarding the management of staff is given in the Performance Management Policy – See Performance Management. Core funded academic staff are now required to use the Workload Management System. Click for full details of the workload management system. For more details of how this should be implemented please talk to your Line Manager. |
The
Unit Administrative Officer is responsible for keeping the Unit’s list
of line managers up to date. Click for a current

Staff should have regular one-to-one meetings with their line manager in which staff's work and professional development is planned and reviewed. Line Managers have responsibility for managing the following functions in relation to their staff:
Guidance on how line managers undertake their roles regarding these functions is provided under the appropriate policy and procedure. Line managers should be the first port of call for staff with regards their work. If staff have any concerns which they do not wish to discuss with their line manager or Project Director they should speak to their mentor or a member of UMC. Monthly Time Sheets for Research Associates and Staff Associates should be signed off by the Budget Holder before being passed to the Faculty Research Manager for countersigning, several days before the payroll deadline of the 5th of the month. Line Managers should ask to see a completed record of the days and hours worked by Research Associates and Staff Associates before signing the Monthly Timesheets. Click for a revised spreadsheet for recording hours worked by Research Associates and Staff Associates.
