This forum is kept largely for historic reasons and for our latest changes announcements. (It was focused around the older EPPI Reviewer version 4.)

There are many informative posts and answers to common questions, but you may find our videos and other resources more informative if you are an EPPI Reviewer WEB user.

Version 4.6.3.0 extends the new Machine Learning capabilities, includes a few important improvements and two bugfixes. On the machine learning side, EPPI-Reviewer now allows to create charts representing the result of the chosen Machine Learning model, it also allows to automatically create 10 codes, grouping together the items classified by the model, on the basis of the scores returned by the Machine Learning algorithm. The two bug fixes are solving a couple of problems that were relatively common: errors when using EPPI-Reviewer via HTTPS (encrypted pages) and the known difficulties with permanent source deletions.

New Features:

In the search tab, if a search represents the results of a Machine Learning modelling exercise, a new "Visualise" button is now shown. The visualisation shows a bar-chart with items grouped in 10 sets organised by their score. The graph can be exported as a PNG file. Moreover, it is also possible to create 10 corresponding codes (one per bar in the graph) so to quickly gain access to the items that have been scored within a given interval.

In the main screen, the code-sets toolbar has been changed. Two new/changed icons/buttons are present, while one functionality has been moved to the context menu (right click).
- Icon Change: the machine learning window is now opened via a new button (same function, but different icon), the new button represents a gear and spanner, which should represent better the concept of Machine Learning.
- New icon: Refresh all sets. If two or more people are logged on the same review and are editing code-sets, they previously needed to reload a review to receive each-other's changes. This isn't necessary any more as the new "refresh all code-sets" icon allows to reload all code-sets in with one click. This function might be useful also when heavily editing code-sets: it is a known issue that editing big code-sets for lengthy periods sometimes makes EPPI-Reviewer less responsive.
- Moved functionality: the code-sets toolbar used to have an "expand all" icon. This feature wasn't used much as expanding all code-sets is rarely useful. We have removed the "Expand All" icon, in its place, right clicking an expandable part of a code-tree will now show a new "Expand from here" option, which we believe should be more useful.

Small improvements:

- In the main toolbar, the print icon (export formatted bibliography) now includes an option called "NICE format", this is a format used internally at the  National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

- In the same submenu, the two options used to create requests for full-text via the British Library now specify "(no subscription details entered)" when they are disabled. [Users who have a British Library account  can configure the appropriate British Library codes via the Account Manager.]

Bug-Fixes:

- Deleting sources forever used to be extremely slow. As a results, deletion attempts frequently timed out and could also slow down EPPI-Reviewer for all users. This problem is now solved.

- Accessing EPPI-Reviewer via an HTTPS address is enough to prevent EPPI-Reviewer from working. Because of how EPPI-Reviewer dynamically swaps from HTTPS (encrypted) to HTTP (not encrypted) data connection (the former is used when exchanging sensitive information such as username and passwords), opening up EPPI-Reviewer from the HTTPS page creates a problem: such an address implies that all communications are encrypted, and hence, once data starts being exchanged unencrypted, the connection fails - in practice this generates multiple errors when opening a review, culminating with a fatal error that logs out users. The problem became relevant during the latest months as Google started directing people to the HTTPS pages by default. This problem is now circumvented: opening up EPPI-Reviewer from an HTTPS page now automatically redirects to a suitable HTTP address. As a result, no one should experience the problem anymore.
