Hi all,

I have the IE 11 desktop app on my computer already, and I installed Silverlight v5; however, when I go to login, a new, blank tab opens. It is clear that Silverlight is supposed to be loading, but it is not. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Silverlight, and I have restarted my machine. I have also checked my security settings and tried turning the firewall on and off. Nothing.

I have tried all the same methods in Mozilla ESR as suggested in other help forums, and still no luck. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Best,

Alec S

Hi,

Are you using an institutional / corporate machine? In that case, I'd check with your IT people as to whether there are any web / internet security measures in place which would prevent the running of add-ons like Silverlight. I'd also check that it wasn't blocked by your anti-virus software.

You will also need to check the Silverlight add-on is enabled within Internet Explorer (or Mozilla Firefox). It sounds like you have checked the latter, and there are other posts on the forum regarding Firefox.

For the former (Internet Explorer), click on the settings button, and then select Manage Add-ons.

Your Add-ons will be listed, but make sure you are showing all add-ons.

Right-click on the Silverlight add-on, and then click More Information.

Finally, check that the add-on is enabled for all sites, or at least the EPPI Reviewer website.

Hope that helps! Let us know how you get on; if it still proves to be a problem, we may need to know further details about which operating system version you are running, etc.

Kind regards,

Zak Ghouze

Hi Zak,

Thanks for your reply.

I am indeed using a corporate machine, though I did take it to IT and registered the problem and they checked the security measures. Nothing.

I did ensure that Silverlight was enabled as you instructed (and it was, in both instances for IE and Firefox).

Thus, I am drawing to the conclusion that I might need to go back to IT and have them double check the security measures.

Will keep you updated.

Alec

Hi again,

I took my computer to IT and they double checked the security settings and my firewall - nothing was enabled that would be blocking the add-on from loading.

I am not sure what the issue at this point, besides that it is just something with my computer.

Any suggestions?

Alec

Hi Alec,

Do you actually get to the log-in screen, or is the browser not even displaying that?

Have you tried opening EPPI Reviewer in Firefox ESR, rather than Internet Explorer?

(Note that you need Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR), rather than standard Firefox. It is available from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/.)

(Once installed, you will still need to install and allow the Silverlight add-on, but sounds like you have had that aspect of things checked. You can confirm Silverlight is installed via http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/default.aspx. The page should tell you the current version installed.)

I have also contacted you by email, with further screenshots of enabling Silverlight in Firefox ESR.

The only other thing I can think of that may be causing such issues is your antivirus software not letting you run things correctly. Is it possible for you to "suspend" your antivirus software, and then try the EPPI website again?

Kind regards,

Zak

Please help urgently.

I am using MAC and I have installed the Microsoft silverlight but nothing happens. I've restarted Safari, restarted my laptop and yet whenever I try to log in to the reviewer it takes me back to the Silverlight page asking me to download it again.

I installed Mozilla Firefox and the same issue is occurring. I really need to do a rigorous review on a topic, I have to compare the literature across various countries and analyse the data for a report.

Dear Ayan,

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Unfortunately, Firefox and Safari both stopped supporting NPAPI plug-ins (such as Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash) last week, and EPPI Reviewer 4 depends on MS Silverlight...

You can still run EPPI Reviewer 4 on a Mac using the legacy Extended Support Release of Firefox (Firefox ESR 52.9.0), available from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/mac/. (The British English version is located at the subdirectory https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/mac/en-GB/.)

You can then install and allow the Microsoft Silverlight add-on, available from https://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.

We have a more extensive document on this, available via our manuals page at https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/cms/Default.aspx?tabid=2933. (See the specific link https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/CMS/Portals/35/Silverlight%20and%20web%20browsers_2.docx.)

NOTE - you can install two versions of Firefox, so you can install and run the newest standard version of Firefox from https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/new/ whilst also installing and having available the legacy ESR release. (Unless you create multiple profiles, you will find favourites and histories shared between the two programs, though... We are currently creating a document on running multiple Firefox profiles, which I will send on to you as soon as it is available. However, in the meantime, I'd recommend backing up any existing Firefox favourites and the like before installing the legacy ESR version.

As mentioned, we should shortly have new videos and documents available online, covering the recent browser changes. We are also in the process of writing a new version of EPPI Reviewer that will work across all browsers and devices without the need for add-ons, meaning you will be able to use EPPI Reviewer on tablets, smartphones and computers.

We have also completed a purely web-based coding tool, that allows you to code or screen references via a web-only interface i.e. no add-ons are required, and it can be used on any browser or device. See https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/eppireviewer-coding/home for the application, and this forum post https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/cms/Default.aspx?tabid=2932&forumid=22&threadid=2218&scope=posts for details.

I hope this email / information helps, but do let me know if you require any further assistance.

Kind regards,

Zak
