UMC must be consulted about all recruitment, including the appointment of temporary staff. Project Directors in consultation with Line Managers are responsible for leading the recruitment of staff within their projects. In leading recruitment, line managers should consult with and involve, as appropriate, others who direct projects or manage areas within which the new member of staff shall work.

All work should be offered to currently employed staff before it is offered to Research Associates.

Research students may be offered employment within the following parameters:

1.  The work should not intrude unduly on the student's workload and should not exceed 20 hours per week.

2.  The work should not be so substantial as to be, more properly,  offered to staff already employed in the Unit.

3.  The work should be appropriate for furthering the student's career.

Procedures are available via the Unit Manager.

The Unit administrators  advertise all SSRU vacancies via the SSRU external website.

All projects wishing to recruit staff should speak to a member of UMC in the first instance.

The Institute's recruitment policy is available via the Institute's website, and must be read by anyone considering recruiting.

In addition, line managers leading on recruitment should seek the advice and support of the Faculty Research Manager and Faculty HR Manager regarding proper processes of recruitment.
